Tune like an expert: when and how to readjust calibration in regularity
In regularity, the small details make the difference. Readjusting the calibration can be key to avoiding penalties or missing the podium. But... do you really know when and how to do it?
Why recalibrate?
If you are a co-driver looking for maximum precision, you have probably wondered if it is necessary to recalibrate the Blunik during a rally. This is an advanced tool that only makes sense when there are clear signs that the measurement system has changed since the initial calibration.
How to know if you need it?
Three clear situations where you can consider a recalibration:
- Penalties always positive or always negative This may indicate you are measuring too much or too little. Recalibrating can bring you back to the optimal point. There is no exact formula: only you have privileged information from inside the car. Knowing how to interpret the classifications is essential.
- Tires have heated up The temperature increase (ambient, accumulated kilometers, demanding sections...) causes the effective wheel size to change and thus the measurement accuracy.
- Tires have cooled down Sudden temperature changes, rain or night sections also alter the wheel size. If pressure increases, the wheel grows and you will measure less distance per lap. If it drops, you will measure more.
The calibration parameter is directly related to the effective size of the wheels. Bigger size, higher calibration number.
Tools in your Blunik for recalibration
Blunik II – “TIRES PRESSURE” function
Quick adjustment according to tire pressure.
- Expressed in bar (1.0 bar = 10 calibration units)
- Available only at the start of the section
- Resets to 0.0 bar at each start
Examples:
- You calibrate in the morning with cold and at noon it's hot: +0.4 bar (normal tire) / +0.2 bar (hard tire)
- You start with mild temperature and then it rains: -0.8 bar (normal tire) / -0.4 bar (hard tire)
Blunik II Plus – “CALIB ADJ” function
Precise adjustment, ideal for demanding co-drivers.
- Adjustment in m/km (meters per kilometer)
- Can be applied during the section
- Just indicate meters to add or subtract and press ENTER
Do not adjust for the driver’s racing line
If your driver cuts corners, do not compensate lost meters by modifying calibration. This can negatively affect measurement on straight sections. Use the +10/-10 keys to add or remove meters manually. This is the cleanest and most controlled way to maintain accuracy.
Extra tip: you can configure the keys to add/subtract any meters you want.
Calibrating and recalibrating: a skill to learn
There are no magic formulas. Recalibration is a technical decision based on observation and experience. If you recalibrate without basis, you can worsen your result. Observe, note penalties, compare with meters and calibration parameter. When you have enough signs and confidence, try it. Blunik makes it easy, but the responsibility is yours.
